ACADEMIC AND CONTENT WRITING TIPS AND TRICKS

Preparing for an Unusual Fall Semester

Higher education certainly won’t forget 2020 anytime soon. After a spring semester interrupted by the onset of COVID-19, colleges and universities are still grappling with how to best handle Fall 2020, with the semester start just weeks away. Depending on your school, you may be attending socially distant in-person classes, completing the semester online, or signing up for a hybrid model.

With so many uncertainties, it can be hard to prepare for the semester ahead. Follow these tips to manage an unusual semester successfully.

Stick to a Schedule

If you’re enrolled in online classes, don’t let yourself get behind. Watch classes live, if you have that option, to establish a regular routine. If classes are asynchronous, set aside a time every day to study for that class, whether you’re watching a lecture, reading, writing, or working on a project. It can be easy to get behind when you’re enrolled in online classes.

Engage With Your Professor

You may not be able to pop in for face-to-face office hours if you have a question or meet with your dissertation committee in person, but remember that faculty are still there for you. Virtual office hours or a quick Zoom chat can keep you on task and informed.

Be Flexible

If you’re starting classes in person, the goal is to finish them the same way. Unfortunately, all it takes is a COVID-19 outbreak on your campus to shut down in-person learning quickly. Be prepared to switch to online instruction as needed so that you can make the switch seamlessly.

Find Creative Ways to Study

Taking classes online doesn’t mean you have to be cooped up inside your house all day, every day. Have a Zoom study group with your classmates. Meet with a friend for a socially distant coffee outdoors on campus. Take your books to a favorite outdoor spot for some fresh air while you work.

Flexibility and focus can help you succeed during these challenging times. Remember, I’m available for editing assistance all semester long, and the entire process is done virtually for your convenience. Let’s chat about how I can help you with your academic manuscripts this semester.
