Being-self employed has its perks, but like I discussed previously, it can also have its drawbacks. Staying on task, in particular, can be an ongoing challenge for the self-employed, especially if you’re working from home when you’re surrounded by distractions. Those distractions may be kids who always need help with something, that laundry that never seems to be done, or your pet who always wants to be in your lap.
The good news? Productivity is achievable from home––it just takes some work! You’re set up for success by working privately in a space free from office distractions like chatty coworkers and meetings that never end.
Follow these tips to maximize your productivity as you work from home.
1. Organize Your Tasks
Staying on task is easier if you know what you need to tackle every day. A variety of productivity apps and trackers exist, so find one that’s right for you. I recently switched to Trello, which allows me to create different boards for different projects. So, I can look at my writing assignments and editing projects so that I can easily build a daily to-do list that keeps me on task.
2. Block Your Time
Since distractions during the workday are seemingly inevitable, build in some time for breaks so you can tackle those distractions. Work in uninterrupted blocks and then take a break so that you can shift to “home” mode for a bit to tackle non-work-related tasks. For instance, I might tackle a 2-hour writing block in the morning, take a break for some family time, and then focus on editing tasks in the afternoon or evening.
3. Streamline Tasks
Find ways to streamline common tasks. For example, if I’m invoicing several clients in a day, I reserve the invoicing and emailing until all projects are complete and ready to go. That way, I can generate and send invoices and emails in one sitting, rather than going back and forth throughout the day.
4. Plan for Tomorrow
My final work task every day––or these days, late every night––is to make a to-do list for the next day. I recently started doing this for a couple of reasons. First, it shows me what I accomplished in the day. While I feel perpetually behind these days with three kids at home, it’s gratifying to be able to check several tasks off of my to-do list at day’s end.
Next, it reduces my stress about the next day. Instead of feeling overwhelmed with what’s left to do, I can devise a realistic plan for the next day to keep myself on schedule. Finally, it saves me time when work begins the next day. I already have my to-do list open in Trello, so I’m ready to jump into the task to start my day.
