ACADEMIC AND CONTENT WRITING TIPS AND TRICKS

Working From Home Essentials

Working from home is nothing new to me––I’ve been at this for more than a decade. However, I now have plenty of clients and friends who are adjusting to the sudden shift to working from home. Over the years, I’ve found some helpful apps and tools that simplify collaborating and connecting with clients in a virtual space.

If you’re looking for new ways to connect in a work-from-home environment, consider these tools:

Google Drive

Google Drive makes sharing files easier than ever. I write exclusively in Google Drive and share links to content with my clients. Google Docs has helpful collaborative tools, allowing you to track changes, add comments, and even compare documents. I also use Drive to develop templates for long-term writing projects, which I can easily copy for different assignments.

Slack

Many of my writing clients use slack to collaborate. Here, clients post assignments and share feedback, and I can pop on with any questions I might have. You can have multiple channels for different teams. Plus, there’s an app so that you can add slack to your smartphone.

Tip: Enable desktop/app notifications so that you never miss a message. If you’re like me, you’re not always on your computer, and these notifications ensure you don’t miss a message.

Dropbox

Dropbox offers cloud storage for your files. However, it’s more than just a storage space. It also allows for convenient collaboration. Skip sending files back and forth with coworkers, and instead share files and folders via Dropbox. When you do, you won’t face any frustrating versioning issues that can occur when different people are working in different versions of the same file.

Got any questions about your new work-from-home adventure? I’m by no means an expert, but I do have plenty of experience to share!
