Capitalization in APA Style

One of the most frequent APA Style corrections I make relate to capitalization. Many students follow an up style of capitalization, meaning they’re inclined to capitalize words that don’t need to be.

However, APA Style is a down style, one that defaults to lowercasing words unless there is a specific reason to capitalize them.

Here’s a helpful table that tells you what should be capitalized and what shouldn’t. You might be surprised by how many items in that never capitalize column end up capitalized in students’ papers.
